I've picked up the axe again after years. Been looking after me mum who ain't that well and found it up in the attic, thought Id sold it. Left handed squiure strat, bought a little practice amp
I was never any good, but decided to give it another bash.
Crikey! The amount of resources out there is bonkers, been following a few people on you tube. Trying to learn again.
Any good places to look at (apart from Burt Weaden)
Find it quiet relaxing. Plus it keeps the noggin going and stops me from going down the pub .

A great quote I once heard was that amateurs practice until they get it right. Professionals practice until they can't get it wrong.

A great piece of advice I had when starting out was pick songs you KNOW, songs you know by singing along to without thinking about it, makes it much easier to learn that way.
The first song I learnt to play was The River by Springsteen, I knew the song inside-out lyrically and melody-wise as I'd sang along to it hundreds of times, once I learned the chords it was easy and found that I had Em G D C & Am in the bag, it was all downhill from there.....

I suppose the only advice I could give, is to practise, practise and practise.
I earned a reasonable living doing it, for over 50 years, but my secret was to always play with good musicians. That way, everyone thinks that I must be as good as them.
In truth, I was always the singer/frontman, but though I wouldn’t call myself a guitarist, I am quite competent on the instrument.
It really is a matter of time and effort.

Based on what you've said, I would have a look at this site - Songsterr Tabs.
I'm all for heading for any shortcut, and this offers the shortest route I've found so far to playing a song I want to play.
Here's the link to their animated tab for Master of Puppets as an example.

Press play and it moves along the tab as you hear it.

YC...I am.trying to learn and find Andy Guitar on YouTube really useful. Find him easy to follow and he teaches different levels so if you are more advanced he covers that too. He has a link to his site on YouTube as well.

Yea when I was younger it was all about playing along to records and trying to lean riffs and that, but now I just I want to be able to pick it up and play anything.
Yea I seen that Justin fellow he looks good.
There is so much out there.
Hoping to get to a level where I can do a gig for my 60th..Few years of yet so plenty of time.
I just marvel at some of these players out there. Some our great.

Alongside Justin Sandercoe I recommend Paul Davids. He focuses quite a bit on theory, and some of his song breakdowns are excellent.
I’ve been playing on and off for 30 years. Pretty decent with chords but have always struggled with keys and scales. I bought myself access to Paul Davids ‘Learn, Practice, Play’ course - pretty good so far and feels like things make a bit more sense. It’s like learning a new language.
Main thing is to enjoy it - even if it’s just playing along to some favourite songs.

Exactly, it depends what you want want. to do
I played bass in bands exclusively for almost a devade as spotty punk in various bands before buying a six string.
I learned by playing along to records starting with the Ramones and gradually made it more difficult with the likes of Anthrax and Metallica. I will always be hopeless at lead guitar but did learn a few hammer on pull off tricks and can do a passable cover of Thunderstuck and most of Eruption but tricks is all they are.
Just get the two main barre chords completely natural via practice, practice, practice and you are ready to go.
Open C and G can also come in handy.

Similar story to me, after not playing for years the fingers start to get sore although not bleeding like they did as a teenager, yet...
Just sitting slowly picking it all up again is great. Starting to play a riff you hadn't played for years and then realising it's all in there somewhere you just have to retrieve it
. Today I tentatively tried to remember the opening riff to What Difference Does It Make by The Smiths. About ten minutes later my guitar was chiming along. Fucking brilliant. I feel like I'm more into it now than when I was young, much more time for it maybe.

I guess it depends what type of music you want to play...
Ive taken up the guitar after a few years playing the uke and I like Andyguitar for his Oasis stuff, Rob Fennah for his old school 70s acoustic, Marty Music good for more US rock stuff, modfather1965 for loads of Jam tutorials...
Check them out...

Loads of stuff on YouTube, you can learn anything you desire these days, better than trawling through chord/tab books!
Good luck with the strumming, can’t beat it for a bit of therapy.

justinguitar.com is worth a look. Plenty of different types of courses on there and it's all free I think.
Plus he's a really decent bloke (for an Aussie!). We were based at the same studio for a few years.
